A COUNCIL chief has approved spending more than £100,000 on revamping to a Winchester community centre.

Winnall Community Association has been given £132,000 by Hampshire County Council to make improvements at the community centre it runs in Winnall.

Proposals include updating the ladies toilets, improving storage for the main hall, fixing damaged flooring, creating a café area, and improving external space including a children’s play area.

They would also re-model a soon-to-be vacated office space to provide IT facilities.

The centre is used for a range of activities for all age groups, including a breakfast club for children entitled to free school meals and 25 different groups.

With improvements it hopes to increase this to 40.

Executive Member for Policy and Resources and Council Leader Cllr Roy Perry approved the funding from the Community Buildings Capital Fund.

A council scrutiny sub committee that previously heard the group's case concluded the project demonstrated community benefit in a deprived area.
