A UNIQUE medieval Winchester church is aiming to raise a five-figure sum for roof repairs.

The 13th century St Swithun upon Kingsgate in Winchester, is the only church above a gateway in the country, but needs £35,000 for crucial work.

Churchwarden Christine Pilgrim, churchwarden, said: “As far as we are aware the church is probably the only ‘living’ church above an archway left in the country.

“It is amazing how many people (including locals) don’t realise this precious and unique building is in our city of Winchester. When folk do come up the stairs they are quite taken aback at the simplicity and peace within.

“Our Visitors Book reveals testament to that, in many languages, and our Prayer Basket fills with hopes and fears of many who have found us and stopped for a while.”

Ms Pilgrim has the church had seen many repairs but the last major one, which included re-roofing, cost £2,000 in the 1950’s.

Fundraising is starting this month to plug a £35,000 shortfall in the cost of £65,000.

The effort will include the chance to “Buy a tile" for £10 when the tiles are being put back up in the latter part of October.

To own a tile that will be part of this historic church surely is a must, said Ms Pilgrim.

She said it can be dedicated to a loved one or to mark a special occasion. Purchasers will also receive a certificate.

To buy a tile/s contact St Lawrence Parish Office, Colebrook Street, Winchester SO23 9LH or 01962 849434.

The church is due to closed for the works for around five-six weeks from September 26.
