WINCHESTER Art Club members and guests filled the City Space Gallery at the Discovery Centre last Friday for the Private View of the Club’s 87th Annual Exhibition.

The event was formally opened by the Mayor, Cllr Jane Rutter who praised the very high quality of the exhibits and say that she thought the standard was even higher than last year when she herself had bought three paintings.

After the Mayor had presented the awards to the prize winners of the various categories club chairman, Hilary Archer, made a surprise presentation to her of a framed caricature drawn by a long standing member of the club, Mike Ellis.

In a subsequent tweet that evening she thanked the club for a wonderful cartoon and expressed her delight at opening the exhibition.

After the Private View many of those present moved on to hear a lecture by art historian Dr Anne Anderson on Art Nouveau.

Speaking without notes for over an hour Dr Anderson communicated her great love and knowledge of the subject, keeping the large audience’s attention with wit and clarity. She was complimented by the Mayor on a wonderful talk. The exhibition now runs until October 9.
