IT is the annual Christmas event that is loved by families and children in Winchester.

The are around Winchester Cathedral will be lit up in style as this year's Lantern Procession will take place on December 1.

The popular annual event is one which families from across the city look forward to each year.

From 6pm to 8pm the procession will take place in the city centre, there will also be community carols organised in association with Churches Together in Winchester.

Meanwhile Bella Crafts will give children the chance to make lanterns with a workshop at their Romsey and Fair Oak sites, giving children a chance to get creative in the days before the event.

This year however the procession will take place in the Outer Close, usually it has taken place in the city centre.

A spokesman for Winchester Cathedral said: "“We’re all looking forward to something which has grown considerably in popularity over the years and become a regular event in many families’ calendars. Over 150 lanterns of all shapes and sizes paraded last year - sporting some remarkably inventive designs - and having carols from Winchester Churches helps to give the event and everyone who takes part a bit of that true community Christmas spirit.”

The procession of colourful handmade paper and willow lanterns will leave the Cathedral at 6pm and parade around the Outer Close.  The celebrations include live music, congregational carols and conclude with fireworks.
