A CAMPAIGN to raise awareness about violence towards women comes to Winchester tomorrow.

The city will be supporting White Ribbon Day and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.

There will be an information event and representatives from agencies will be in the city urging people to support the campaign and wear a white ribbon.

Cllr Frank Pearson, Portfolio holder for Environment, Health and Wellbeing at Winchester City Council, said “Winchester always does a great job at supporting this campaign and this year is no different. At a national level the campaign raises the awareness of domestic violence, and helps raise the awareness needed in order to promote the services available to those who have been affected by domestic abuse here in Winchester”

Police commander for Winchester district, Chief Inspector Claire Taylor explained the importance of the campaign.

She said “Domestic abuse can form itself in many ways, from physical violence, through to coercive control, including preventing contact with friends and family and withholding money. It touches and affects everyone; the victim, their family and the wider community. Throughout the year we work in partnership with different agencies with the aim to increase trust and confidence in reporting domestic abuse.

“Raising awareness of domestic abuse through the White Ribbon Campaign is so important; it’s a great opportunity to let people know about the types of support available to victims, and shows that domestic abuse will not be tolerated in our communities.”
