TWO restaurants in Winchester are closing and another food outlet could also close its doors.

Bosses at Fish Tale bar and grill on Eastgate Street announced on Facebook that the Winchester business is shut.

They said: “We’re sad to announce that we are no longer open for business.

"Thanks to all our wonderful customers for your support.”

The premises have already been converted for new restaurant called Diya.

The second closure will be Gourmet Pizza in The Square on January 18.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the future of Maison Blanc on the High Street which was one of more than a dozen in the UK started by chef Raymond Blanc.

The chef is currently not involved in the business which opened in 2009.

The Chronicle spoke to staff at the French-style shop, who confirmed they are undergoing a period of “consultation” amid speculation that the store could be one of those that will be shut.

In September the Evening Standard reported around 300 jobs are at risk at Maison Blanc after the owner of the upmarket patisserie chain launched a review of its store portfolio.

Property agent Davis Coffer Lyons was hired to look at the future of 13 stores which includes its Winchester outlet.

However staff reiterated they are open for business but would not say if it will be shut soon.

The patisserie had been closed for several days after Christmas, prompting Winchester residents on social media to speculate about its future.

Google, also lists the business as “permanently closed” and people took to Winchester Pics on Facebook to post their concerns.

One person wrote: “Food in there was really nice, will be a real shame if it goes. At the end of the day, any Celebrity chef namesake place is going to be a bit dear.”

City councillor Ian Tait said he was sad to learn of the news about Fish Tale and the uncertainty of Maison Blanc.

Cllr Tait said: “I think both businesses from a personal perspective I always thought Maison Blanc was not as good as it should have been, but it is very popular and it adds something to Winchester.

“I think for Fish Tale was an independent business offering very high quality food, it seemed people go to Rick Stein instead because of the brand name.”
