A WINCHESTER war memorial is among those that were listed or upgraded ahead of commemorations marking 100 years since the Battle of Passchendaele.

The King's Royal Rifle Corps Memorial at Cathedral Close was among 13 memorials that were upgraded.

The move was made by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of government heritage body Historic England.

The battle of Passchendaele in World War One, lasted from July 31 to November 6, 1917.

It is officially known as the Third Battle of Ypres and was infamous not just for the scale of casualties but for the mud.
