HAVING been so close on three previous occasions, a garden centre has finally scooped a gold award at a major flower show.

Humbees of Marwell near Winchester received the accolade at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in London.

It comes after the centre received three consecutive Royal Horticultural Society silver awards for their previous efforts.

Their winning display for 2009, which was exhibited in the ‘inspiring spaces’ section, was titled Tropical Treasures.

Its was designed by Kirsty Unwin and features a pint-size tropical island with foliage plants, a treasure chest, wooden keg and white sand.

She helped to assemble it with centre owner, Robert Humby, and their efforts were rewarded with the gold medal.

The exhibit has now returned from London and is on display at the centre in Thompsons Lane opposite Marwell Zoo.
