AN 11-YEAR-OLD has come out as one of the top young mathematicians in the country.

Patrick Winter, 11, from Otterbourne, has earned himself a gold medal in the Primary Maths Challenge, a nationwide contest that all schools can enter.

Only 30 young people get the award and this is the second time in two years that Patrick has earned himself the honour.

The Otterbourne Primary School pupil, who already has an A* in GCSE maths, had to sit one mathematics paper at the school then after qualifying for the next round along with 1,000 others had to sit another paper.

Alison Langrish, headteacher, said: “To be in the top 30 that’s quite remarkable. He’s a very gifted young man.”
