ONE of Winchester’s oldest residents celebrated her birthday in style this week.

Daisy O’Dell turned 105 on Tuesday and enjoyed a garden party at Brackenlea Care Home in Shawford with her fellow residents.

Daisy, who grew up in Southampton, said: “I am going to make sure I enjoy my party. I am not going to be boring, I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.”

Deputy Mayor Cllr Frank Pearson also attended the party to personally deliver Daisy’s message from the Queen.

She was married for 45 years to Stanley O’Dell, a welder for British Rail, until his death in 1970. The couple lived in Eastleigh and Daisy worked in the shoe and dress departments in Edwin Jones’ shop in Southampton, now Debenhams.

Daisy remained in Eastleigh until she was 99, but moved to Brackenlea six years ago.

She said: “I have had a lovely time here without a doubt, everyone here is so nice and friendly. I love it here.”

Beverly Rice, manager of the home, added: “I’m so proud of all the staff for putting this all together for Daisy and the residents. It has all turned out wonderfully.”

Daisy was joined at the party by her daughter Valerie Smith, 80, who lives nearby in Bishopstoke. She also has two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with some of her family living in Florida.
