INSPIRING more people to be involved in appreciating, protecting and enhancing our heritage was the subject of a day’s discussion at Winchester Discovery Centre.

It was organised by Civic Voice, with the City of Winchester Trust as the local host for civic societies across the South of England.

Civic Voice, the national body for promoting civic pride, along with all civic groups throughout England arranged a day with the help of English Heritage where ideas were discussed of getting more people involved in protecting the assets of the past which everyone values.

Many civic societies wanted ideas of how to recruit people to help them in taking a pride in their own towns and communities.

Keith Leaman, who chairs the City of Winchester Trust, said: “Winchester’s planning policies recognise that many people value Winchester for its heritage and history.

“The trust has long campaigned to promote the character of Winchester and protect its unique landscape setting.”

The talk entitled Heritage Counts at the centre in Jewry Street took place on Tuesday (April 3).

I wonder what the City of Winchester Trust has to say about the disfiguring effect that the "market' has on our historic High Street.
