THE Easter getaway came to a standstill on the railways yesterday afternoon following a fire on a freight train near Winchester.

Firefighters were called to Micheldever Station just before 3.45pm yesterday after a fire started in the engine compartment of the freight liner diesel locomotive.

Passengers heading to Winchester and Southampton from London were faced with significant delays of at least 45 minutes as firefighters and rail bosses tried to get the train off of the track.

Bus services were being put into place to replace trains between Basingstoke and Eastleigh, while trains from London Waterloo were being diverted to avoid the disruption.

A South West Trains spokesman said: “We would like to apologise |to passengers for the inconvenience this disruption caused |and thank them for their patience.”

The service was expected to be running as normal today.
