A WINCHESTER charity has raised enough money to replace glass artwork destroyed by vandals.

Friends of Hyde Abbey Garden lost their commemorative glass plaque in 2010 when it was smashed, but have now raised the cash to replace it.

The new panel has been designed by local artist Tracey Sheppard and is estimated to cost around £7,500.

City councillor Sue Nelmes, chairman of the group, added a number of improvements have been made to the garden.

Speaking at the group’s annual general meeting, she said: “We have managed to raise enough money to replace Tracey Sheppard’s engraved glass panel. The uneven gravel has been repaired so it is now safe and not a dangerous surface.

“We have found two professional gardeners who will keep the shrubs well groomed and we have at last found an insurance company which will give us cover at an affordable price.”

The meeting also hosted a talk by Jennifer Harmer who helps manage Dean Garnier Garden in the Cathedral
