Second big power cut in four days hits Alresford area
A FIRE resulted in more than 1,000 homes being left without electricity south of Alresford on Friday night – the second major cut in four days.
The power cut appeared to have been triggered by a fire at an overhead transformer in a paddock off Kilmeston Road, near New Cheriton, just before 7pm.
Of 1,200 homes affected, electricity was restored to most houses by 10pm but around 200 households had to wait until 11.30pm and a few to 1am on Saturday.
Scottish and Southern Electricity said they were still working to find out what caused the fire.
The electricity supply for New Cheriton and Cheriton was re-routed on Friday night, meaning a mobile generator was not necessary.
The outage comes just days after a similar incident in the Alresford area last Tuesday (August 28), which affected 1,195 homes. A spokesman for Scottish and Southern Electric, said it is still not clear whether there is any connection between the two power cuts.
He said: “I will need to liaise with the depot to find out as soon as possible. We would like to apologise to our customers and assure them we worked as quickly as possible to correct the problem.”
