Matty Tew will have the chance to bag £32,000 for one night’s work after winning a place in the coveted Prizefighter tournament.

The Betfair Prizefighter Light Welterweights III takes places at York Hall, Bethnal Green on July 6, and sees Tew up against seven others in a one night contest.

The winner, who will have to be victorious in a hat-trick of three round fights in a single evening of boxing, walks away with the huge cash prize and a potential fast track to title glory.

Tew’s invitation to take part in the event is the fruition of a long held hope for the Southampton fighter and his trainer, Wayne Batten, who have always felt the tournament format would suit him.

Batten said: “It’s a great chance for fighters these days. It’s something we’ve always spoken about since day one with Matty, that Prizefighter would suit him.

“There’s a big prize on offer and normally if you win that it’s a good platform and Matchroom, who run it, often offer the winner help with their career and you can quickly go on to fight for titles.

“I think the way Matty boxes it will be perfect for him. He likes being quick out of the blocks.

“The difference between the Prizefighter and doing the rounds is big. Mentally you have more time to settle down when you have plenty of rounds whereas in Prizefighter it’s all about getting going quickly. Matty has had a lot of four rounders so he’s used to this sort of distance and having to make an instant impression to win it.”

The tournament will be shown live on Sky Sports with the sold-out night also featuring Kevin Mitchell’s return to action in a ten-rounder as the lightweight aims to get back on the world title trail after falling to WBO king Ricky Burns in a thrilling challenge in Glasgow last September.

Ryan Taylor, Liam Shinkwin and Tony Owen have been confirmed as the final three names in the Prizefighter tournament.

Old friends Taylor (7-1-1) and Shinkwin (6-0-1) clashed for the Southern Area lightweight title at Wembley Arena in March, with the latter taking a points decision and his former sparring partner’s unbeaten record. Taylor will be desperate to gain revenge if the draw pits the pair together.

Carshalton’s Owen (14-1) is no stranger to York Hall and the southpaw will be looking to launch himself onto the big stage and into title contention with success in east London.

The final trio join Chris Evangelou (9-2), Danny Connor (8-5-1), Tew (12-1) and unbeaten pair Eren Arif (3-0) and Charlie Rice (6-0) in battling for the title and the £32,000 winner’s cheque.
