Kevin Pietersen is one of three senior players set to miss the limited-overs leg of England's Ashes tour in the new year.

Pietersen, James Anderson and Graeme Swann will take no part in the five one-day internationals, or three Twenty20s, scheduled for January and February.

All three are central to England's ongoing Test campaign in Australia.

Pietersen also seems sure to figure in future limited-overs engagements such as next year's ICC World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup, along with Anderson at the latter.

All were absent, though, from the 15 and 16-man squads announced today.

Hampshire's Danny Briggs is included in both squads, while Michael Carberry is included in the ODI squad.

Test captain Alastair Cook will lead the ODI squad, with Stuart Broad once again in charge of the Twenty20 tourists.

England's Test coach Andy Flower explained the reasons for trimming the competitive workload for 33-year-old Pietersen and Anderson, who is two years younger.

Swann's omission is, conceivably, more a selection issue - with James Tredwell once again involved, after more often than not in the past year being a successful like-for-like replacement for the senior off-spinner.

Flower said: "This is going to be another month of tough cricket, and then a heavy schedule from the West Indies tour onwards.

"Straight after the Twenty20 World Cup, the Indian Premier League begins - and while that's on, the English season starts.

"Our players who play all three forms cannot play 12 months a year.

"Guys like Anderson and Pietersen are in their early 30s now; they are prize assets, and we need to look after them."

The intention is to preserve and hone their skills for higher-profile assignments ahead.

Flower added: "From a physical perspective, they're always dealing with various niggles - and sometimes they need to be taken out of competition.

"That is not for them just to rest - it's so we can maximise their skills when they do play."

National selector Geoff Miller said: "We have an important period of limited-overs cricket coming up, with an ICC World T20 in Bangladesh in March and just over a year away from the ICC Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia.

"These two series against Australia allow valuable opportunities for players to push for places in both squads - and given the rivalry between the sides both series will no doubt be keenly contested."

England's increasingly established limited-overs wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler will be among those relishing his opportunity to impress again.

He said: "Obviously, any time you get picked for an England squad, it's a very proud moment and an exciting one - so I'm really looking forward to the one-day series and the Twenty20s afterwards.

"It will be tough in a foreign country - and particularly in Australia, with their home conditions.

"Having been here with the England Performance Programme and watching the Ashes from afar, it's hard cricket ... really exciting, and that's what you want to be a part of."
