HAMPSHIRE pair Shane Castle and Jordan Winbourne have qualified for the last 16 of the English Under-21 Championships.

Castle, 15, won through the south region qualifier held at Frames Sports Bar in Coulsdon just a week after only losing 6-4 to Mark Selby in the UK Championship in York.

Castle, from Marchwood, defeated Sonnie O’Sullivan 4-0 in the first round and Lincoln Leech 4-1 in the second.

Castle’s highest break of the two rounds was a 59 in his final frame against O’Sullivan.

Hedge End-based Winbourne, 17, is a former Chandler's Ford SC junior.

He now plays for Sarisbury Green Social Club A in the Super League and his 136 break last December was the highest in the Southampton & District Social Clubs League in the 2012/13 season. Winbourne defeated Tokki Yamaguchi 4-1 in the first round at Couldson and Robert Tickner 4-0 in the second.

Winbourne posted two breaks of 50 in the final frame.

The Hampshire pair now progress to the last 16, which will take place in Leeds next March.

Castle is a former Under-14 and Under-16 national champion, but neither teenager has ever won the national Under-21 title.

l Closer to home, Shane’s cousin Billy Castle, who is reigning town champion, smashed in a 116 break while playing for Churchills A in the Southampton Super League.

On a night of big scores, Castle’s teammate Mike Finn also rattled in a 92.
