Matty Tew could be set for a mouth watering Saints v Pompey derby in the near future.

The Southampton fighter is in talks over a possible showdown with Portsmouth’s Floyd Moore.

It would be a high profile south coast derby, the first at that kind of level since the infamous Matthew Barney victory over Tony Oakey that sparked a riot.

Though the fight has not got to the stage of purses being agreed, both men are thought to be up for it, with talk that it could be made into a Southern Area title bout or a final eliminator for the English strap.

The venue is also yet to be decided but it is likely that Tew will have to travel down the M27 for the contest, with Moore’s hometown of Fareham a potential host for the contest.

Both the lightweights are very evenly matched on paper. Tew has a little more experience with 15 fights to Moore’s 14, but at 31 is eight years older than his potential opponent. From those bouts Tew has the edge in terms of fights won while Moore can boast more knockouts.

Both have won titles, with Tew having bagged the International Masters belt and Moore the Southern Area.

If the bout does go ahead, it could happen as soon as the end of February or the beginning of March and is sure to be a huge ticket seller.

Organisers are also hoping there will be a huge ticket seller in Southampton soon with another Guildhall show set for Saturday, February 22.

The show has a double edge for boxing fans as it will be run in conjunction with Wessex Heartbeat as part of their High 5 appeal.

The Guildhall will have a different layout to recent shows with the floor area taken up by tables for the event to make it similar to a dinner show, but with the tiered seating and the balcony also available for fight fans.

There is no confirmation on the card yet but there are sure to be several local fighters involved.

The likes of Tony Hill, Joe Pigford and Rich O’Connor are all hoping for an outing while Tew could also be involved, depending on the outcome of the talks over the Moore fight.

King Davidson is not likely to be involved as he considers his next move following a routine second round stoppage of Stephen Okine in Nigeria over the festive period.
