Officers looking for three men after England star hit by coins during Arsenal and Spurs derby

Romsey Advertiser: Police hunt after ex-Saints star Theo Walcott is pelted with coins Police hunt after ex-Saints star Theo Walcott is pelted with coins

Police are looking for three men accused of pelting former Saints star Theo Walcott with coins during an Arsenal-Spurs clash.

The 24-year-old came under a shower of missiles as he was stretchered off after injuring his knee during the north London derby at Emirates Stadium on January 4.

Stewards and St John Ambulance staff were also hit by the coins, in a confrontation that saw Walcott make a ''2-0'' gesture with his hands in retaliation, referring to the scoreline.

His knee injury means he will be out of action for six months and miss out on the World Cup in Brazil.

Today Scotland Yard released grainy pictures of the three men suspected of throwing coins.

The force said: ''During the match, an Arsenal player on a stretcher, medical staff carrying him and stewards were struck by coins and other missiles thrown at them from a section of the crowd occupied by Tottenham fans.

''The player and stewards received minor injuries as a result. Officers from the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation and have now identified three men they would like to contact.''

Anyone with information can call the Public Order Crime Investigation Team on 07769 241315.

Romsey Advertiser:

In the days after the match, the Football Association confirmed that it had contacted Arsenal and Spurs over the missile-throwing and would back the harshest punishments possible, including life bans.

Police are also investigating anti-Semitic Tweets, that referred to the Holocaust, that were posted after the match.

I think throwing of coins at players during a football match is disgusting particularly in England at England players! If I ever saw Saints fans throwing coins at the opposition players then I would identify them to the police. This has no place in this country and we should stand up to it!

How is this local news? It wasn't at a Saints game. We're hardly likely to recognise the thugs in the photo. Walcott left Saints nearly 8 years ago.

Sorry but he was idiotic making gestures at Spurs fans in a heated derby match just because they were shouting at him, it's asking for trouble and he put the medical staff at risk with his stupid behaviour. He should be bit more tactile.

I got pelted with coins at the pub in Birmingham New Street after we beat Watford in the FA Cup semi final 11 years ago. I've hated Watford fans ever since.

Theo was a silly bu99er here, but he knew what he was doing - I doubt he was pressing charges, rather it would be the security peeps at the Emirates.

Not local but nor is crimewatch, it'd matter to you if these kn*bs pelted you or your family at a game, because they did to me!

Whilst I agree it is dangerous for people to throw coins, why did Theo taunt the opposition fans? The real danger was to the people carrying the stretcher, I bet he never thought of that?

Crimewatch is broadcast nationwide. The whole point of story is to appeal to help find the people involved. Which is unlikely by running a story in the local rag anywhere but not North London.

The recent Chelsea fans arrested at a Saints match lived in Basingstoke, most Spurs fans have left the local area, that's clearly obvious to anybody who's been there in the past 20 years or so! This is obviously high profile so makes the national press because when we reported the coin throwing incident to the stewards a few years ago, one missed my 8 year old daughters head by a matter of inches, they couldn't give a s***!

Fair enough. This does seemed to be pretty high profile. The whole Walcott being an ex Saint seemed a bit tenuous that's all. Seven Sisters is a dump but some parts of North London are ok.

Got pelted with coins, when Steve Moran scored that last minute FACup goal at the dump down the road.

Not a new thing, unfortunately.
And I bet they now wish they'd kept all those 2p coins, so they could buy a better quality player than they have now. Surprising what you can get for £5 these days.

He was already getting pelted when he did it. He could have sworn or thrown something back but instead he used banter. Please stop being so pretentious and self righteous. If a saints player did that whilst pompey fans threw coins we'd think it was hilarious.
