Portsmouth have confirmed the departure of manager Richie Barker less than four months into the job.

The Fratton Park board have acted with Pompey, the 2008 FA Cup winners, in serious danger of relegation from the Football League.

Academy boss and former Pompey player Andy Awford has been named caretaker manager until the end of the season.

A Portsmouth statement read: "Richie Barker has left his position as Portsmouth Football Club manager by mutual consent.

"Following a meeting between Richie and the board, both parties agreed that it was in the best interests of the club.

"Portsmouth Football Club would like to thank Richie for all his work and wish him well for the future.

"Andy Awford has been appointed caretaker manager until the end of the season."

Former Bury and Crawley boss Barker, 38, only replaced Guy Whittingham at Fratton Park in December but has been unable to halt their slide down the table.

Tuesday night's 3-0 reverse at Rochdale was their third straight defeat and left Pompey, the pre-season promotion favourites, just one place and two points above the relegation zone with seven games to play.

Awford's second stint in caretaker charge will begin at Newport on Saturday.

Im not just a Saints fan, I am a fan of football. As a fan of football it saddens me to see Poopeys plight. I wish them all the best an hopefully in a few years they will be back towards the top of the football league. Then we can give them a right ol' hammering on a more level playing field. After all derby days are always the best.

It saddens me to see all the damage this football club has done to the community. They have robbed , cheated and put honest working people out of job and pocket. I agree it is sad when a football club goes to the wall but, this heap of sh.t has not been a football for years. They keep going on about history because that's what they will be after their next seven game and as far as i'm concearned NOT BEFORE TIME.

It's a real shame, I thought Agent Barker was doing a super job!

Personally I don't want them to go out of business, it's far more entertaining to see them get relegated AGAIN and to get stuffed by Eastleigh!

Also, who remembers the "relegation parties" they through in our honour when we were struggling! As Marie Antoinette once said, "let them eat Skate!"

You should enjoy the bragging rights. My point is that it there might not be a club to have those bragging rights against in a few years. Personally I would like to see at least one game against the skates in the next 10 years, Highly unlikely if their slumming in the conference, or even liquidated.

I think it's a shame that the people that own the club now are struggling. They took a brave decision to try to wrestle their club out of the hands of the type of people that had placed their football club in jeopardy, and won - so hats off to them.
Also I don't judge a club based on the type of people that populate local news forums and the drivel the majority of those spout - imagine the impression the people on this board portray to other clubs.....
If the current crop of players are not up to the job of keeping them in the football league, then so be it, the club will have to re-group and re-build. Can't say I get any real joy from it though, it doesn't make you a bigger Saints fan by hating Pompey more.

Saints actually sent themselves down in 2005. Pompey losing to West Brom actually sent Palace down. Saints and West Brom could have both won that day and West Brom would have went down and Saints would have stayed up.
Irrespective of that, I still remember them p1ss1ng themselves laughing when we were in the sh1ts! and now they've sunk even lower than we did.
