Waterside Amateur Boxing Club's George Joy wins National Minors Championships in Manchester
George Joy marked a special weekend for Waterside Amateur Boxing club by winning National Minors Championships in Manchester.
Joy, 12, who attends Noadswood School in Dibden Purlieu, won the Minors Championship after winning the Southern Counties title beating Jake Rodda from Smallholdings ABC.
Rodda was a tough competitor having won all four of his contests to get to the Southern finals but Joy put on a cracking display of boxing to win by a unanimous decision, putting him through to the national finals.
His opponent was Ali Akbar Javid from Bury ABC.
Again Joy boxed well, with non-stop work winning all three rounds with ease to take the minors title for boys born in the year 2002 and in the weight class of 41.5kg.
Waterside coaches George and Stuart Pidgley praised Joy’s training and sparring commitment and said: “Joy’s first boxing season has been a great start for the lad, winning seven out of the nine bouts he has fought in, and his latest achievement has given the club a real boost.
“We hope his success will encourage and inspire all the youngsters in the gym to work hard and fulfil their potential.”
Joy trains at the Waterside ABC Boxing Club in Long Lane, Holbury, Hampshire.
Waterside ABC are always looking for new members, boys or girls who would like to box. Training is on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 7pm-8.30pm.
