Brockenhurst amateur golfer Martin Young got his Concession Cup off to a bad start as he and partner Richard Partridge lost the opening game of the Ryder Cup based tournament.

The inaugural competition, that has honorary captains of the legendary Jack Niklaus and Tony Jacklin, got underway yesterday in a sweltering Florida, writes JOSH DONALDSON.

Young was first out after the opening ceremony and the nerves may have got to the 44 year- old who lost by five shots to American mid- amateur pair Mike McCoy and Chip Lutz.

Great Britain and Ireland did fight back though as the morning progressed; winning two of the following four match- play encounters to leave the Concession Cup delicately poised leading into today's fourballs.

Young is partnered with Wales’ Ben Westgate, who was victorious in his opening foursomes match.

The tournament runs through to Saturday where each of the 18 man team will face off in a singles match.
