Southampton AC’s U17 & U20 young athletes have made it three wins in three weeks.

They repeated their Wessex League & Southern Athletic League success by dominating their opening South 1 division contest in the UK Youth Development League.

At a damp and sodden Southampton Sports Centre, the team won by over 200 points from Crawley AC.

Oliver Bromby took his customary sprint double with Jamie Jupp, Jason Amartey, Alex Ruggles and Rudy Cemal (B string 200m win) all scoring sprint points.

All the women’s 100m sprinters won with Amy Teal and Izzy Bryant taking A wins and Libby Nunn and Alexandra Burchill in the B string. Teal and Bryant won in the U17 200m with Emily Jenkinson and Nunn second in the U20 races.

Abbie Fisher and Rhianna Beavis were 3rd and 4th in the A and B string 300m respectively. Jenkinson was second in a top class 400m race behind current English schools champion Holly Turner (Brighton). Anna Sharp won the B string race. In the U20 men’s 400m, Jack Lynch recorded a pb to win the B string race and Alex Ruggles was third in the a string. In the U17 men’s race, Jamie Abrahams also ran a pb in third.

In the 800m, Adam Coffin and Luke Powell were second in their U20 B string & U17 A string race respectively, and David Fisher was fourth in the a string U20 race. In the womens equivalent, Anna Sharp was pipped on the line in the U20 A string and Frances Arnott took the B string. In the U17 race, Anna Reavey ran a pb in sixth.

In the 1500m, Lucas Clements and Alex Prinsep were both second in the U20 races. Jamie Abrahams was third in the U17 mens A string and Luke Powell took the B string race. Briallen Taylor and Anna Reavey were fourth in the U20 & U17 race respectively.

The mens 3000m was a high quality event that saw Southampton AC sweep all before them. Niall ran a pb to take the U20 race just in front of Mo Mahamed, who won the U17 race in a pb to go third in the UK age group rankings. Abdi Mahamed was second in the U20 race and Sam Costley was second in the U17 race in a huge pb, moving into the UK top 30 age group rankings. Frances Arnott was third in the womens race.

There were pbs in the sprint hurdles where Mille Cavanagh ran 12.4 secs to win her 80m U17 race and Owen Lawrence ran 14.5 secs to come second in his 100m U17 mens equivalent.

Katya Oldfield and Fisher took an A and B string double in the 300m women’s U17 race and Lizzie Clifford also won the U20 womens 400m race. Clements and Holt were second in the U20 mens 400m race.

The 1500m steeplechase saw three Southampton wins with Helen Jones taking the U20 womens race, Sharp the U17 womens race and Costley the U17 mens race at his first go at the event.

Rory Farrell and Lawrence won the U20 & U17 high jump respectively with Danielle Scott third in the U20 womens high jump and Oldfield second in the U17 age group. Claire Humby was second in the U20 womens pole vault. Farrell and Lynch took an U20 mens long jump double with Lawrence second at U17. In the womens event, Emma Cowell won the U20 age group with Hollie Garrathy was second in the B string and Burchill fourth at U17.

Lynch was second in the U20 mens A string triple jump with Amartey winning the B string. Garrathy won the U20 womens triple jump and Teal was third at U17. Farrell (11.79m pb) was second in the a string U20 shot with Sam Wellington also achieving a pb in second place at U17. Ruggles was fourth in the U20 b string. In the women’s shot putt, Cowell took her second event of the day in the U20 age group with Sophie Merritt consolidating her place at the top of the UK age group rankings by winning the U17 age group.

Holt was fifth in the a string U20 mens discus, while Clements was second in the B string.

In the U17 mens age group, Matthew Callaway threw 41.57m for second place, a new pb and a top 10 UK age group ranking. In the women’s discus, Emily Green and Holly Pearce won the u20 A string and B string respectively, Green leaping to sixth in the UK age group rankings and Pearce with a personal best to go inside the top 25.

Merritt, who also tops the UK age group rankings for this event, won the U17 age group with an enormous throw of 41.72m. In the Women’s hammer, three more wins were chalked up with Green and Bryant taking the U20 womens age group A & B string respectively and Pearce winning the U17 age group.

Farrell and Clements both threw pbs to be sixth and fourth respectively in the U20 mens A & B string javelin. Ben Carter took the U17 mens event with a new pb of 42.89m. Jordan Campbell and Cavanagh winning the U20 A & B string women’s Javelin respectively. Campbell is second in the UK age group rankings with Cavanagh also in the top 10. Green won the U17 event.

The men won all four relays as the U17 & U20 team won the sprint relay and the 4 x 400m with Mo Mahamed making up 15m on the last leg of the U17 mens longer relay. Result: 1st Southampton AC 679 pts, 2nd Crawley AC 468, 3rd Brighton & Hove AC 424, 4th Aldershot, Farnham & District AC 386.5, 5th Camberley/Woking AC 375.5 , 6th Bournemouth/Poole/New Forest Juniors 334.
