MICHAEL Carberry can celebrate his recall to England’s limited-overs squads by guiding Hampshire back into pole position in the LV County Championship’s promotion race.

At some stage tomorrow morning, Carberry and Jimmy Adams should have a modest target to chase down against Glamorgan, who closed the penultimate day of their Championship match at The Ageas Bowl on 185-9 – a lead of just 64 .

A second win in five games would send unbeaten Hampshire back to the top of the second division, another reason for Carberry to celebrate following his inclusion in England’s squads for this month’s T20 match and the first three (of five) one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.

But Hampshire were denied a fourth batting point and restricted to a first-innings lead of 121 after resuming on 330-8 this morning.

Graham Wagg and Jim Allenby both finished with four-wicket hauls as Hampshire were bowled out for 345 in reply to Glmaorgan's 224.

Kyle Abbott was the last to go when he nicked behind for a 17-ball 22, attempting to emulate James Tomlinson’s six over cow corner.

But then the South African claimed 3-43, with the help of two James Vince catches at third slip, the second of which was world-class.

The first accounted for Jacques Rudolph, Abbott’s compatriot, and Tomlinson struck in successive overs as Glamorgan lost their first three wickets with nine runs on the board.

Will Bragg (74) came to the rescue, putting on 50 with Stewart Walters (25) and then 98 with Jim Allenby (47), the match-winner in last September’s YB40 semi-final between the sides.

But Abbott benefited from some low bounce to trigger Glamorgan's loss of five wickets for 27 runs.

Liam Dawson, having held on at second slip to remove Walters, had Bragg caught behind before a sensational left-handed catch by a diving Vince gave Hampshire hope of a three-day win.

They were denied that by more rain, but there was no Wagg of the tail from Glamorgan as Graham spliced a straightforward catch to Carberry and Ruaidhri Smith was caught behind.

Hampshire's fifth win in 40 Championship matches at the Ageas Bowl is within their grasp.
