Banned: The 50 Hampshire football thugs outlawed from the World Cup

Romsey Advertiser: Banned: The 50 Hampshire football thugs outlawed from the World Cup Banned: The 50 Hampshire football thugs outlawed from the World Cup

MORE than 50 thugs in Hampshire have been banned from the World Cup as police launch a crackdown on football-related violence during the tournament.

Already two people have been arrested and another three are being sought for breaching football banning orders which prevent them travelling during the competition.

As part of a national operation, Hampshire police have contacted all those currently subject to banning orders, which are imposed by the courts on people who have caused or been involved in football-related violence.

They have been ordered to hand over their passports, preventing them travelling to Brazil, where the World Cup is being staged.

In Hampshire the number of people currently subject to banning orders totals 52, with five breaches for failing to hand over passports already being investigated.

Romsey Advertiser:

The force has also revealed that patrols will be stepped up across the county when World Cup matches involving England – and hopefully featuring Saints stars Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana, pictured below – are being played.

It is hoped the move will minimise disorder that could happen as scores of pubs are allowed to stay open later to screen the matches.

Football liaison officer PC Andy Darbyshire said: “Hampshire police hope all of our communities enjoy the forthcoming World Cup.

“Some additional resources will be deployed on match days involving England to maintain public safety and provide reassurance.”

Romsey Advertiser:

“It is hoped that everybody will be part of a celebratory atmosphere, any offences or disorder will be treated seriously and if applicable, football banning orders will be sought.”

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed that it would also be stepping up the number of crews on shift during the England matches.

In Southampton 420 licensed premises could serve alcohol up until 1am provided they are showing England games as part of relaxed licensing laws for the tournament.

A bit over sensational really - how many of those 52 people with banning orders would have been planning to go to Brazil anyway?

There is a big difference between having a punch up at Baker Street and spending £5k on a trip to Brazil where many of the locals are packing the kind of heat that the British army can only dream of!

Yes, let's spend hundreds of thousands of pounds locking up these people. Most of them were convicted of throwing a few windscreen wipers and hubcaps at the Pompey cup game in 2010. I don't think I'll be able to sleep at night if these people are allowed to roam the streets.
