Sixth wicket pair smash their way to victory
11:24am Friday 6th June 2014 in Sport
Gus Flack and Ieaun Wathen went on a six-hitting spree to rescue Old Tauntonians & Romsey at Hartley Wintney and set up a first Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 win of the season.
Between them, they plundered eight sixes and 12 fours in a quick fire 92-run sixth-wicket partnership, which rescued OTs from 77-5.
Flack nailed a 23-ball 58 including five sixes and six fours, while Wathen cleared the boundary rope three times and also hit six fours in his 57, scored off 30 deliveries.
Ironically, the pair had been due to play for the seconds at Romsey in a Hampshire League match against Compton & Chandler’s Ford and were called up at relatively short notice!
Their boundary barrage pointed OTs to 207 (Teale 4-25) – a target Hartley Wintney were unable to chase down.
They began well enough with Matt Kerr (40) and Jack Hersh (37), but fell apart when Steven Kay was brought into the attack as OTs’ fifth bowler.
Kay, who finished with 4-28, sent wickets tumbling as HW slipped from 67-0 and into a collapse from which they never recovered.
Kerr held firm, but the Newman brothers, Peter (with his off-spin) and Robert, bowling left-arm spin, ripped through the Hartley Wintney innings, leaving the hosts well short on 148 all out.
Hampshire Under-17 spin prospect Pete Newman took 4-26 and Robert 2-25 as OTs broke their season’s win duck.
