A YOUNG Romsey athlete is ranked fourth in the nation for under-15 javelin throwing after a stellar performance at the national championships.

Ben Upfold, pictured, originally went into the competition ranked 15 out of the 16 throwers, but a new PB throw of 37.67m at a Southampton open event saw him up to 10th.

Then, at the English Schools national finals, Upfold reached the final in eighth position, before three further throws saw him up to seventh.

He is now currently ranked fourth in the UK for under-15 javelin, 12th for discus and 26th for hammer.

Other Mountbatten pupils at the finals included Holly Pearce (14th – U17 hammer), Emily Green (8th – U17 discus) and Izzy Bryant (U17 100m), while Romsey School’s Amy Teal was eighth in the U17 100m.

Teal and Bryant did claim a silver medal in the 4x100m relay.
