KELLY SIMM hopes there is still more to come after she helped England to gold in the women’s gymnastics team event at Glasgow 2014 tonight.

The 19-year-old produced strong performances in Monday’s vault – where she scored 14.600 and today’s floor – 12.466 – as the English team held on to claim gold overall with a score of 167.55points.

Simm, from Whiteley, who was joined in the team by Rebecca Downie, Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold and Hannah Whelan, had an anxious wait to see if they had done enough as defending Commonwealth champions Australia were still to compete.

But both the Australians and the Canadians made key mistakes in their routines and as Team England watched on it soon became clear that they had done enough to claim gold, much to Simm’s obvious delight.

“To stand up on that podium was just amazing, to be alongside the whole team was an incredible feeling,” she said.

“We are all excited about what is to come, we have a few more finals to come here at the Commonwealths and then beyond that we are all on a journey.

“And to have this (gold medal) gives you that bit more confidence to go out and give it your best.”

And Simm, a former student of Henry Cort Community College in Fareham, was full of praise for the way the whole team chipped in when called upon, including Downie who shrugged off an ankle problem to complete her beam routine that proved vital.

“We have all done the best we could and put out good performances as a team," she added “As a team we all covered each other's mistakes, we are all so close and were cheering each other on all the way, we just couldn’t have done any more."

And after a maiden senior championships that has already yielded a gold medal, Simm is confident the best is still to come.

“This is my first big senior international and the crowd have been amazing, before we started each event and then during and after they were so loud, it was really good.

“Yesterday I did the vault and that went according to plan which was great, and then the floor was ok as well.

“I put my hand down on one tumble but that is a brand new tumble that I have only been working on for a few weeks so it was a bit hit or miss to put it out and it’s a great experience for the next one.”
