Hampshire’s four-wicket bowling hero Chris Wood says he’s ’very excited’ at the prospect of helping the county win the Division 2 title.

“Due to injury I’ve not played that much four-day cricket this season,” he said.

“But I did well against Kent and really hit this game with a bang.

“It’s always nice getting big players out, so it was tremendous for me to get four of the leading Glamorgan batsmen out.

“If I can repeat the dose in the second innings, may be on Thursday or on Friday, I’ll be absolutely delighted.

“The wicket has been doing something all the time, which underlines how well Vincey (James Vince) and Sean Ervine batted on Tuesday.

“To get a total of 357 from the position we were in (53-5), was a fantastic effort.

“I’m unsure what the game plan will be when we step out on Thursday, but we’ll be aiming to extend our lead to between 450 and 500 and then get at them again.

“If we can bowl Glamorgan out a second time, we’ll be champions – and that’s a very exciting prospect.”

Wood said that Hampshire had were in two minds about whether to enforce the follow-on after bowling Glamorgan out for 172, leaving them 185 runs behind.

“With two and a half days remaining and the pitch only going to get worse, we decided to bat again,” he explained.

“There wasn’t much discussion.

“We looked at the weather forecast and what rain there could be on Friday appears minimal, so we thought it was best to grind them down.

“We didn’t want to be left chasing 100 or 150 on the final day on a wearing surface, so we decided to bat on.”
