Romsey & Abbey Tennis Club are celebrating after being chosen as Club of the Year award for 2014 by the Hampshire & IoW LTA.

The honour came in recognition of the club’s upgrade of their courts and installation of floodlights. The award was received by the club’s match secretary, Jacquie Taverner. The Romsey club are indebted to Test Valley Borough Council for the upgrade of the playing surface and to Sport England for funding to install the floodlights.

They are also grateful to club development officer, Veronica Broughton Shaw, who has masterminded the project from start to finish. Club secretary, Gill Pletcher, added: “We would like to think that the award is also in recognition of the sterling work of our coach, Richard Libby, in developing and instigating programmes to encourage people, both adults and juniors, into tennis for enjoyment and fitness. Thanks to Richard, our membership continues to grow.”

The award of an engraved silver salver was on display at the club’s last afternoon tournament of the year, when 40 members took part in a mixed doubles American-style tournament.

Jacquie Taverner won the ladies prize and Andy Walczak took the top man prize.
