Hampshire new boy Jackson Bird made a winning return to his first full match for nine months – by helping to bowl out South Australia for 45.

The Australian fast-medium bowler, who has played three Tests, celebrated his 28th birthday by finishing with match figures of 3-83.

He took 1-9 in the final innings as Tasmania skittled South Australia for the fourth-lowest total in their history.

Bird’s new-ball partner, former Test star Ben Hilfenhaus, took 5-11 as Tasmania completed a 313-run win.

Bird was due to play for Northants last season before pulling out with the back injury that has prevented him from playing since last March.

His first comeback match was abandoned in the wake of the Phillip Hughes tragedy, but he is on course to fulfil his agreement to play for Hampshire during the first three months of next season.

It will be his first taste of county cricket and an ideal opportunity for him to stake a claim for a place in Australia’s squad for the next Ashes series, which begins in July.

Hampshire have also signed Kiwi veteran Andre Adams for the first three months of next season, while former Sussex star Yasir Arafat is one of their two overseas signings for the T20 Blast.
