Tottonians wrapped up a fantastic season in the style that earned them the London 2 South-West title.

Totts, who go into unknown territory with a place in London 1 South next term, defeated local rivals Winchester RFC 49-10 in front of a bumper crowd at their Water Lane base.

Winchester justifiably felt hard-done-by when they lost out to Totts on the opening day of the season last September.

But there was no question over the best side at the weekend, as Totts ran in seven tries, all of them converted by captain Robbie Searle’s deadly boot.

The home side showed their intent from the whistle when centre Mike Searle split the Winchester defence inside five minutes.

The visitors held firm for the following quarter-of-an-hour and put three points on the board when Johnny Morris kicked a penalty after Totts’ Ieuan Williams was yellow carded for bringing down a maul.

But resolute Totts struck twice over the following ten minutes – winger Faisil Mutiti crossed in the corner and Robbie Searle finished off a great break from full-back Stuart Davies. Totts turned around 28-3 up when Number 8 Dan Stocks picked up a loose line-out ball and crashed over.

Winchester hit back after the interval when fly half Greg Sullivan found winger Tom Forester who finished off in the corner. Morris added the extra two points.

But Tottonians produced another three second-half tries. Mutiti got his second before Robbie Searle sprinted from his own ten-metre line to Winchester’s 22 and off-loaded to cousin Mike who touched down.

And Richard Buck finished off Tottonians’ season in the style that had earned them promotion, jinking his way past defenders before handing off the final tackle to ground the ball.

Delighted Ken Johnstone, who was given the role of club president when he became the principal of Totton College 36 years ago and still holds the rugby club position today, said: “This has been an absolutely fabulous season.

“It has been a 15-man game that we have played and in all the games we have just been relentless in our points scoring.

“We have scored more than 800 points in 22 games.

“The coaching has been great and the players have responded to everything that has been asked of them and Robbie (Searle) has been a great captain.

“The side has been great to watch and played some exciting rugby all season. It’s going to be a real test next season but they deserve the opportunity to play at the new level.

“The side is still not fully matured and I think they can do well. I’m just so very proud of the whole club.”

Portsmouth will remain in SW2 after avoiding relegation with a 35-14 away victory at Old Alleynians.
