GLENN Maxwell will be available to play for Yorkshire in the LV County Championship after the Indian Premier League.

The former Hampshire batsman has had a dismal time of it at the IPL, scoring just 75 runs at 10.71 for Kings XI Punjab, who are bottom of the table.

But he will have a fresh start with the county champions to look forward to when his IPL stint ends a week on Saturday.

Signed predominantly for the NatWest T20 Blast, Maxwell will replace Cheteshwar Pujara as compatriot Aaron Finch’s replacement.

Maxwell, who has played three Tests in 31 first-class matches, was due to fill his time in between T20 Blast fixtures by playing second XI red-ball cricket.

But Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon said: “It looks as though Glenn’s team aren’t going to qualify for the latter stages of the IPL.

“He will come as soon as that stint has finished but we are just waiting until that’s been absolutely confirmed.

“With the talent he’s got, it’s just a matter of him needing to play. He’s got too much talent for him not to play well in red-ball cricket.”

Maxwell’s arrival will come too late for Yorkshire’s next match against his former Hampshire teammates, which starts at Headingley on Sunday, but he is likely to make his debut against Somerset at Taunton on May 24.
