JAMES Vince made a match-winning century as Hampshire’s Royal London One-Day Cup campaign got off to a record-breaking start - with the help of a career-best all-round performance from Liam Dawson.

Vince’s first century of the season helped Hampshire amass 343-6 - their highest limited-overs total at The Ageas Bowl - before Dawson followed his unbeaten 73 (66 balls) with 6-47 from seven overs to complete an 87-run win.

Hampshire got off to the worst possible start after winning the toss when Michael Carberry was caught behind to the first ball of the match.

But Vince made an 89-ball 103 (12 fours), his first century of the season for Hampshire in his first one-day match as the county’s captain.

Jimmy Adams (34) hit a six to the short leg-side boundary, before moving past 3000 career one-day runs as he and Adam Wheater (45) scored at a run-a-ball.

Joe Gatting (14) was run out by former Hampshire man George Bailey, but Vince reached a 41-ball fifty and celebrated his fourth one-day ton after another 38.

He was bowled by off-spinner Chris Nash and then Gareth Berg (20) picked out deep mid-wicket to leave Hampshire 265-6 at the end of the 43rd over.

No matter. Dawson and Chris Wood put on 78 from the last 42 balls to give Hampshire their biggest limited-overs total on home turf since 1975, when Barry Richards and Gordon Greenidge shared a stand of 210 out of 371-4 against Glamorgan in the 60-over Gillette Cup.

Wood struck six fours in his 24-ball 38 not out and Dawson launched two sixes in three balls against Chirs Liddle immediately after reaching fifty from 56.

His 73 is his highest one-day score against county opposition and he followed it with his first one-day five-for as Sussex were bowled out for 256 in 41 overs.

Sussex had reached 118-1 from 18 when Dawson took the big wicket of Luke Wright (58) , who had smashed three sixes in an over against Danny Briggs (5-0-40-0) before holing out to Mason Crane at long-on.

After conceding 31 from his first two overs, Sussex reject Crane bounced back with an impressive second spell (4-0-15-2) of leg-spin before slow left-armer Dawson took the last five wickets in 11 balls while conceding only four runs.
