CHRIS Wood is hoping for a painless passage into the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-finals - 12 days after his bloody nose helped secure Hampshire’s place at T20 Finals Day.

Hampshire’s T20 quarter-final win at Worcester was confirmed when Wood was hit in the face on the square-leg boundary when he failed to pick up an attempted six in the New Road gloom.

He received a bruised and bloody nose for his troubles, following an outstanding spell with the ball, in which he took the two wickets to fall - including the scalp of Moeen Ali - and a sensational piece of fielding to run out Tom Kohler-Cadmore from short cover.

Now he has his sights on another last-eight win, in the One-Day Cup against Gloucestershire at Bristol today (10.30am).

“As a player you want to contribute in every way you can again so it was a great feeling to get us over the line at Worcester – but not the bang on the nose!

“The atmosphere at Finals Day is incredible so we’re looking forward to it but playing at Lord’s is everybody cricketer’s dream and if I had to pick one I would go for the 50-over comp.

“But Gloucestershire are a good one-day side, especially on their own patch, so we’ll have to play well.

“Notoriously we’ve played poor cricket there. We had a 50-over game there last year that we should have won and lost from nowhere.

“But what’s on our side is the fact it’s a quarter final and we know how good we are.”

Gloucestershire are aiming for their first Lord’s final since 2004, when they beat Shane Warne’s Hampshire en route to their sixth one-day trophy in as many years.

This will be Hampshire’s first cup tie at Bristol since that three-wicket defeat, when Warne’s 4-23 was not enough to atone for his decision to bat first on a wet wicket in the third round of the C & G Trophy.

Hampshire will be looking for their first knockout win at Bristol since 1983, when a Chris Smith century ensured a six-wicket win in the 60-over Natwest Bank quarter-finals.

They will also be looking to avenge last month’s Benny Howell-inspired T20 defeat at Cheltenham.
