WINCHESTER City have joined Havant & Waterlooville and Fleet Town in the semi-finals of the Hampshire FA Senior Cup.

They survived an early scare tonight before seeing off Sholing 2-0 at the Denplan City Ground.

Sholing had an ideal chance to take the lead with a seventh-minute penalty but Barry Mason’s effort cleared the bar.

Brother Byron smacked the post 15 minutes later but, by then, Matt Benham had fired City in front following good work from Zach Glasspool.

Winchester boss Paul Masters was dismissed from the dugout before half-time but his mood lifted when Jamie Barron ran through to make it 2-0 after 66 minutes.

Byron and the third Mason brother, Dan, had their chances, but City came closest to striking again when sub Harlan Basker hit the post.

*Team Solent climbed to ninth in the Sydenhams Premier Division with a 2-0 win at Verwood Town.

After a goalless first half, Jim Orvis broke the deadlock from 20 yards and a stoppage-time Martin Johnson goal made the points safe for the Southampton Solent University outfit.

Tonight’s other Wessex Premier fixture between Whitchurch and Hamworthy United ended goalless.

*Petersfield Town romped to a 6-0 win at Christchurch to reach the last eight of the Russell Cotes Cup. All the damage was done in the second half with David Jerrard, Oli Bailey and Andy Todd scoring two apiece.
