DAN Mason picked up the Sholing supporters' player-of-the-season trophy - and promptly fired the Boatmen up to second in the Sydenhams Premier Division.

With 61 per cent of the votes cast his way, Mason was the runaway winner of the senior award, while teammate Jamie Bulpitt took the young player's prize.

Both were in the starting line-up tonight to face a Blackfield & Langley side who started the evening in second spot behind champions Salisbury.

But that place now belongs to Sholing, a least for the time being, after Mason's 67th-minute strike - a 20-yard stunner into the top corner - wrapped up a 1-0 victory over the Watersiders.

Blackfield had their chances, but were kept out by a solid display of goalkeeping from Sholing's Ryan Gosney, voted man-of-the-match after keeping his third clean sheet this week.

The Boatmen are two points clear of Blackfield, but have only one game remaining - at Fawley on Saturday - whereas the Watersiders have two.

Glenn Howes' charges go on Whitchurch on Saturday and finish their season at Fareham Town on Thursday (May 5).

Next Monday's Sydenhams Wessex League Cup finalists Team Solent and Newport IoW had contrasting fortunes tonight.

Newport edged the Isle of Wight derby 1-0 at Cowes Sports thanks to Darren Powell's decider, but Team Solent went down 2-0 at Horndean, beaten by goals from Robbie Tambling and Mark Smith.

Fareham Town and Bemerton Heath Harlequins shared a 2-2 draw at Cams Alders.
