GARETH Andrew hit a stunning 70 not out from 41 balls as Hampshire played their part in a record-breaking run feast against defending Royal London One-Day Cup champions Gloucestershire at Bristol.

Hampshire needed the second-highest 50-over total in the county’s history after conceding 352-3 against a Gloucestershire side that had lost their first three game of this season’s competition.

They made a decent fist of it as Tom Alsop, Sean Ervine and Liam Dawson all scored fifties before Gareth Andrew launched five sixes in a spectacular 70 not out from only 41 balls.

He ensured that the match went to the final over, albeit with a daunting 30 still needed.

Two maximums from the last three balls against Liam Norwell meant Hampshire finished on 342-8 as the sides shared an aggregate of 694 runs from 100 overs  - a new record for a one-day match at Bristol.

Hampshire’s ten-run defeat means they have the same record as South Group rivals Surrey, who visit the Ageas Bowl today for another day-nighter (2pm start).

They will hope to bowl better than they did last night against a Gloucestershire side that beat them on the same ground at the quarter-final stage of last season’s competition.

Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger, who made a crucial 87 that day, was man of the match for his unbeaten 166.

His opening stand of 242 in 38 overs with in-form Chris Dent (142)  meant Hampshire were always behind the eight-ball.

Left-hander Dent outscored his captain to make his second ton in this season’s competition off 116 balls, with 14 fours and three sixes, while Klinger went on to a career-best List A score off 150 balls, with 16 fours and six sixes.

Klinger took charge after Dent had fallen to a skied catch at extra cover by Shahid Afridi off Dawson.

Aussie Klinger then moved into top gear, reaching his 15th List A century off 115 balls before smacking a six and two fours in a Ryan Stevenson over as the 300 was brought up in the 45th.

Klinger passed his previous best List A score of 140 not out by blasting his biggest six off Tino Best, the ball smacking against the top floor of the flats at the Ashley Down Road End.

Only Afridi, who conceded 44 from ten overs on his 500th List A appearance, exerted any measure of control.

Hampshire began their reply solidly but after an impressive 39-ball half-century, Tom Alsop drove the next delivery from Benny Howell carelessly to extra cover.

When Sean Ervine and Shahid Afridi departed in quick succession, Hampshire ultimately had too much to do.

Hampshire bowling: Stevenson 9-0-75-0, Best 10-0-75-0 , Andrew 4-0-49-1, Dawson 10-0-60-2, Shahid Afridi 10-0-44-0, Crane 7-0-47-0.
