FOLLAND Sports have sent out an urgent SOS call to get more committee members on board.

With parent company GE Aviation having withdrawn the threat of closure, the dark cloud that had been hanging over the club has thankfully blown over, writes Wendy Gee.

But although manager Dave Herbert and his players are raring to go for the new Sydenhams One season, kicking off at Romsey Town on August 2, there are precious few people helping out behind the scenes.

And, with club secretary Adrian Harris on the brink of leaving, the fear is there will be no one left to run the club.

“I can’t find a replacement and the committee is basically decimated since the threat of closure last year,” said Harris, who has been with the Planemakers for three-and-a-half seasons.

“After numerous years in the Sydenhams Premier, finishing third only two seasons ago, the club has reached a point where it has virtually no committee and has lost its direction.

“I don’t want to walk out on them, but there comes a point when you have to concentrate on other commitments. I work selling software systems and my colleagues would like to see more of me.

“The club has reached a critical stage and if any persons wish to take over Follands, then please get in touch.”

For all its recent problems, the Kings Avenue-based club still has plenty to recommend it.

“We’ve got such amazing facilities and, in my opinion, unquestionably the best pitch in the league,” said Harris.

“A commercial manager is in place and the club has funds in preparation for the season.

“From a footballing perspective, everything is fine.

“If there is someone out there who loves football and wants to step into the Wessex League, they will be provided with assistance and guidance to ensure the transition is smooth and rewarding for them and the club.”

Team boss Herbert added: "We've got a good team together and we're really looking forward to the new season, but the boardroom stuff needs to be sorted ASAP. I can do some of it, but we need more people, more resources."
