GREAT Britain's Liam Heath and Jon Schofield have won men's kayak double 200 metres silver, upgrading on their bronze medal from London 2012.

The pair have consistently finished on the podium since the distance's introduction seven years ago and secured a podium spot at a second successive Olympics.

Heath and Schofield, who is from Petersfield, produced a fine display in a thrilling final at the Lagoa, winning K2 200m silver in a time of 32.368 seconds.

After a barren day in terms of Team GB medals on Wednesday, the duo got Thursday off to a flying start at the canoe sprint.

Heath and Schofield were 0.293 secs behind winners Spain, but had to wait nervously to see if they had joined them on the podium.

A frantic finish meant just 0.12s split second and fifth, but the Britons' powerful finish saw them edge second.

"It is so satisfying," Schofield told BBC One.

Heath added: "It's so fast and furious, you just put your head down and go for it. We did give it a bit of a lunge. You see those white blocks coming up - you just go for the blocks and hit it as hard as you can."

Schofield paid credit to his partner Heath, who will be one of the favourites when the men's kayak singles event begins on Friday.

"This guy is absolutely on fire in the K1," he said.

"He's been killing me in training day in, day out. I didn't want to let him down because he's the best guy out there.

"They (Spain) were a better crew than us today but to get that (silver) is amazing."

After claiming medals in back-to-back Olympics, the duo will decide whether this will be their final Games together, with Heath saying: "I'm not sure yet. We'll take some time out and my wife might have something to say about it as well."
