RICHARD Luffman has not yet completed his first month of Sydenhams Premier football with Alresford Town – and already he has overseen club history.

Alresford are through to the FA Cup first qualifying round for the first time after knocking fellow Magpies Wimborne Town off their perch 1-0 after extra-time in Wednesday’s Arlebury Park replay.

Wimborne, managed by former AFC Bournemouth and West Ham midfielder Matty Holmes, were firm favourites to progress, playing a league higher in the Southern One South & West.

But ex-Otterbourne boss Luffman had done his homework and Alresford stunned their lofty visitors with a goal by ex-Winchester City forward Geoff Dunn.

“I’ve only been here four weeks, so it’s not a bad one to stick in the history books is it?” smiled Luffman.

“We were absolutely top drawer.

“We fancied our chances and we bossed them tactically.

“They had 200 minutes to get at us after taking the lead last Saturday and they could have been there until this Saturday and still not scored! We had them sussed.

“They went online and said they dominated and deserved to beat us and I’m a bit baffled by that.

“We got under their skin and they lacked the heart our players had. I think they saw the game as an inconvenience.

“Tactically we were better than them and credit goes to my coaching team - Ryan Doswell, Marc Cole and Victor (Adrian Grinjincu).

“Wimborne’s coaching staff are ex-pro, but Ryan’s come from West End Brewery and beaten someone from West Ham!

“They can talk about people they had missing, but we had seven players out. We’ve beaten them and rightly so.

“Geoff Dunn worked his socks off and got his first goal for the club.

“A special mention too for holding midfielder Scott Munro who came on in extra-time. It was the first time he’d played for six months after a quad injury.”

Alresford's first qualifying round guests on September 3 are Fareham Town, who bossed their replay 4-0 against Verwood.

“I watched that game and Fareham are a good side with good forwards,” said Luffman. “I like the lad Callum Laycock. He reminds me of Rickie Lambert. He links up play well and is big, strong and good on the ball.”

Alresford now have two major Sydenhams Premier hurdles to overcome, away at Moneyfields tomorrow and at Sholing on Tuesday.

“With the exception of Blackfield, those two are the best in the league,” said Luffman. "We've got to make sure there's no hangover from Wednesday."
