GOSPORT Borough suffered a third straight defeat in the Vanarama National League South yesterday, beaten 3-1 at home by Wealdstone.

It is one more headache for Borough whose manager of 11 years, Alex Pike, has been linked with the vacant post at AFC Totton amid talk of fresh financial woes at Privett Park.

Speaking in a radio interview last week Pike said: "I'm flattered to be linked with Totton.

"In many ways they are a mirror image of Gosport Borough. They're a team that are a sleeping giant. I know it's a term used a lot in football, but that's exactly what they are. They've got great facilities."

Gosport’s ex-Saints and Eastleigh defender Brett Poate managed to wipe out Matt Whichelow’s Wealdstone opener yesterday, but Elliott Benyon’s second-half brace – sandwiched around a second yellow card for Stones’ Sam Cox – put paid to Gosport’s hopes.

*TOM Killick’s Poole Town won the battle of the VNL South newcomers 1-0 at Hungerford Town to move up to fourth in the table.

A goalless draw looked on the cards until Marvin Brooks popped up with the Dolphins’ headed winner in the second minute of stoppage time.

Saints striker Charlie Austin tweeted: “Massive result from my old club @PooleTownFC well done @tomkillick masterclass again.”
