AFTER driving the Team Solent minibus for six-and-a-half hours to Cornwall, the least manager James Taylor deserved was an FA Vase first round win.

And, thanks to two-goal Tyrell Mitford, his efforts were rewarded as the Southampton Solent University side emerged 2-1 victors at Helston Athletic.

“We were dominant first half, we played well but, as usual, we didn’t put our chances away,” said Taylor.

“To be fair, their keeper has made five or six good saves.

“Tyrell scored a good goal from 25 yards, but it should probably have been three or four at half-time.”

Former QPR youngster Mitford struck again after 52 minutes, tapping in following a neat move.

Helston went for broke by throwing on three subs and managed to pull one back, but Solent saw it through.

“The second half was closer than the first, but we always looked like scoring,” said Taylor.

The Students’ reward is yet another away trip to Wessex One outfit Shaftesbury on November 12.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) Team Solent travel to Fareham Town in the Sydenhams Premier Division.

Blackfield & Langley also had a two-goal hero to thank for extending their Vase journey.

Ex-Saint Jamie White scored both in the Watersiders’ 2-0 success at Street.

They must hit the road again on November 12, away to Sydenhams Premier rivals Portland United.

Blackfield’s next league action is on Wednesday, away to another of Saturday’s FA Vase victors Alresford Town.

The Magpies won a high-scoring tie 5-3 at home to Lingfield with goals from Steve Hall (2), Aaron Blaxall, Tom Richards and sub Mo Nyang and now travel to Corinthian in round two.

Glenn Burnett’s Andover Town joined the list of Sydenhams Premier Vase survivors with a 2-1 win at Fairford Town.

Connor Cocklin broke the deadlock on 12 minutes, heading home Adam Grange’s corner.

Four minutes later Andover were two up when, from another Grange flag-kick, Luke Dempsey fired home.

Three minutes before the interval Fairford had Luke Cordrey sent off for a dangerous tackle on Alex Dockree and, after Cocklin had had a second-half penalty saved, Fairford were awarded a spot kick of their own which Jack Ellis converted.

Andover survived a nervous last 15 minutes to reach the second round for the first time in their short history. They will travel away to Croydon.
