Spotted rays are one of the smaller members of the ray family with a four pounder considered a specimen with Gillkicker Point always a good mark for a few early fish.

Brendon Moon headed to Eastney, where he used a medium sized sandeel presented on a size 2/0 hook, to beach a 2lb 14oz fish. He then had another weighing 3lb 7oz a few days later.

Alex Rowland got amongst the small-eyed-rays while fishing a western Hampshire beach.

Fifteen-year-old Owen Strange (Southampton) certainly had a day to remember when he, along with another 160 competitors, entered the World Dab Fishing Championships at Dungeness.

The teenager, who has only been fishing for just over a year and coached by England International John Brown, won the junior section by a canter, collecting a new rod and reel. Only 20 competitors managed to land a sizeable dab.

Malcolm Parsons collected the £300 top prize for winning the Wessex tackle & Guns Flounder League.

It was his third successive win in the event he has fished for over 25 years.

On this occasion Parsons won the popular series, which is supported by over 70 competitors, with 5lb 15oz. As an added bonus, he also collected another £140 for landing the most fish during a single match.

He was also in the winning pairs with Denis Holten, and they shared another £150.

The pool, worth £150 for the heaviest fish in the series, was won by Neil Cooke with a flounder weighing 2lb 7oz.

Cooke also joined forces with Chris Rogers to come second in the pairs section to collect another £116.

The biggest applause of the evening during the presentation was left for Robert Watts who won the huge wooden spoon for landing the smallest flounder of the series weighing just over 6oz.

The Angling Trust Wessex Region Marine will stage their 48th agm at the Elm Tree Public House, situated in the Hightown region of Ringwood, on March 17 starting at 7.30pm,

AROUND THE CLUBS

LYMINGTON & DISTRICT SFCL Avon Beach was the setting for the first round in the clubs catch & release series where whiting, flounders, pout and rockling figured in the catch.

The pool for the longest round and flatfish was won by Gavin Sloper with a 34cm whiting and a 22cm flounder.

Results: A zone, 1st Arron Bridges 143pts, 2nd Garry Mann 83pts, 3rd Paul Dibden 66pts. B zone, 1st Pete Chamberlain 124pts, 2nd Gavin Sloper 117pts, 3rd Chris Ellis 57pts.

WARREN BOAT AC: Pout and whiting figured in the catch during a junior competition fished from the Town Quay in very cold conditions.

Louie Thompson was the top performer finishing with 31 points ahead of Tom Hammond (27) and Charlie Perkis (10pts).

FORD SPORTS SAC: A shore competition held along Southampton's Weston Shore attracted 17 members, although only two managed to land a sizeable fish. Both Steve Wicks-Eales and Clive Hickman both caught a flounder each weighing 1lb 2oz.

CHRISTCHURCH & DISTRICT FC: Rockling, bass, pout, whiting and flounders supplied the action during the second round of the club's Winter League fished along the Steamer Point section.
