Winchester 1st XI have seen some remarkable come backs in their league history both positive and negative, but this eclipses them all.

They travelled to Slough with a slightly undercooked side due to injuries but had a good mix of experience and youth ready for the battle.

In the first half Slough were sharper, faster and stronger than Winchester, scoring 5 goals before halftime. If it weren’t for some excellent saves from Conor Baverstock the damage could have been much greater.

Winchester were chasing shadows and looked low on confidence. As the second half got underway it looked like more of the same as Winchester conceded for the sixth time against a skilfully executed penalty corner routine. However, the momentum of the game changed after a goal from Max Wedderburn crept over the line, and goals from Henry Crompton and Tom Talks followed.

It was clear that players on both sides were feeling the pressure as the score stood at 6-4. After Max got his second from a well worked short corner, making the score 6-5, an equaliser from Club Captain Stuart Swift which he riffled into the top corner and the winner from Harry Cooke propelled Winchester to a 7-6 victory.

Overall, the game was a dazzling display of teamwork and determination that allowed Winchester to snatch an incredible victory from the jaws of certain defeat.
