With Romsey’s first team taking a welcome break from league action the second XV took centre stage at Ganger Sports Centre with a match against Fawley.

In excellent playing conditions, Fawley started strongly, pressuring Romsey through forward drives before the home team had settled.

However, Romsey soon started to gel and the first 20 minutes of the half was fairly reflected by a try apiece, with Romsey’s score coming from lock forward Darren Hall.

From this point on Romsey began to dominate, playing attractive open rugby with the ball frequently reaching the wingers.

The pack was also performing well winning plenty of possession from set pieces and loose play. Romsey's second try came from an excellent break by veteran Nick Creal with the ball reaching speedy winger Sam Adams who scored on his debut for the club.

Shortly afterwards Creal dumbfounded the enthusiastic supporters by appearing close to the try line and gratefully accepting a scoring pass to increase Romsey’s lead to 15:5.

Romsey’s ambitious play continued to trouble the visitors with centre Vytas Jakimavicius running in a fourth try which was converted by Jim Windebank making the score 22:5.

Play continued with determined attacks by Romsey with some excellent breaks by forwards and backs but Fawley worked hard in defence to keep the home team at bay.

Eventually, the pressure told, however, and after a strong forward drive, the ball was spread wide and was gratefully received by an out-of-position Darren Hall who powered over for his second try which was also converted by Windebank increasing Romsey‘s lead to 29:5.

Romsey were now rampant and from a Fawley fumble in desperate defence, Romsey gained possession and Simon Garraway strode in for Romsey’s sixth try. This was an excellent performance by the second XV resulting in a resounding 34:5 victory.

Romsey 1st XV return to action on Saturday, November 26 at Ganger with a very tough fixture against runaway league leaders Guernsey. All are welcome to cheer on the home side in what will be a stern test.
