A RUGBY club is expecting membership to rise following the successful and long-awaited opening of its clubhouse.

Romsey Rugby Club moved into its home earlier in February and has been overwhelmed by the response from the community.

Residents have been welcomed to use the facilities at Ganger Farm Sports Park as a place to watch the Six Nations in comfort.

Club member Nick Smith, who drove the move, said: “The local interest has exceeded our expectations. This is perhaps not surprising, given the anticipation of the opening of the site for more than two years and residents wondering ‘when is it going to open’.

“The rugby club provides the focal point of the site, being the only club with a dedicated area with a lease to operate both a bar and food service.

“It is too early to be specific about the increase in membership numbers but we anticipate a significant increase in social membership and with the opportunity to make private function bookings.

“Throughout the remainder of the rugby season, matches will be shown on the TVs and during the summer selected sporting events will be on the big screen TVs when the clubhouse is open.

“At the moment, we are focused on providing an excellent service to everyone interested in seeing our facilities before launching a comprehensive set of membership packages prior to the start of next season.”

In addition to the successful move, the club’s first team is on a five-match winning streak – adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

The Romsey side’s last match against Fareham included seven tries which led them to a 49-12 victory. The team is welcoming supporters to come along and watch matches while utilising the clubhouse for the rest of the season.

The club started playing at the new facilities at Ganger Farm in October but had to apply for funding to make the clubhouse a home. The base was opened on February 3 in time for the first Six Nations match as planned.
