The blue and gold shirts of Romsey RFC were worn for the first time ever last weekend and they chalked up a debut win to mark the occasion.
The appalling weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the side, or stop it playing some fluent, skilful rugby as they picked up the Crickley Hill Cup at the Cheltenham 7s Festival.
The squad was the result of a collaboration between the club and the charity Rugby For Heroes.
Suzi Darby, one of the Romsey players, said: “It was amazing to think that we were the first girls to play in a Romsey shirt. At the end of the afternoon we were soaked through but pretty proud of our efforts because we played really well.”
Coach Peter Jones is hopeful that the club can build on this success by developing the women’s rugby section. Prospective players of all ages and abilities should come along to Ganger Farm on Sunday mornings from 10-11am.
