STUNNED Romsey Town manager Glenn Burnett was “shocked” to discover that Poole Town striker Charlie Austin’s red card had been rescinded.
In his own words, mild-mannered Burnett is normally really low key and prefers to “just get on with things.” But he was so flabbergasted by the referee’s decision to downgrade Austin’s dismissal in the Dolphins’ win at Romsey on Saturday to a yellow card.
The prolific Poole hot-shot was red-carded after referee Gary Parsons ruled that he elbowed Town defender Ross Gregory in an aerial challenge.
But Poole boss Tommy Killick received a phone call on Saturday evening from the referee who told him he had had a change of heart.
Burnett said: “I don’t want to see anybody sent off but the referee was ten yards away from the incident.
“He (Austin) led with his arm and caught the guy in his face.
“He (the referee) made that decision to give him a red card and then gone home and changed it.
“So what has made him change his mind and phone Tommy Killick up? He couldn’t have seen a replay of the incident.”
