Rangana Herath finished with a career-best 12-171 as England collapsed to defeat in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

England were hopeful of pulling off a record-breaking run chase at 233-4, needing 340 to win.

But they lost their last six wickets for only 31 runs, including centurion Jonathan Trott (112).

Slow left-armer Herath, who took ten wickets at 46.3 apiece in four Championship games for Hampshire two years ago, added 6-97 to the 6-74 he took in England's first innings.
